“Can you tell how far down it is?”, is a question often asked to our VT utility locators.

The answer is, YES! Our ground penetrating radar (GPR) and electromagnetic locators have the capability to tell the depth of buried utility lines. However, it does vary depending on the conditions. For example, in low conductivity material such as dry sand we’re able to see up to 30 feet with low frequencies, though most buried lines are only 2 to 10 feet down.

In other conditions such as moist clays or shale and other high conductivity materials GPR signals may be absorbed. So higher frequencies are used which reduces the depth of penetration to 3 feet or less.
